Skillful Use of Power - Upcoming Workshop

Power Used Skillfully

How do we come together to have a conversation about power, and avoid potential abuses of power?

In today’s litigious climate, and especially with the uprising of the #MeToo movement, these questions are especially relevant.

I have fortunate to have been involved with the Right Use of Power Institute (RUPI), developed by my colleague Dr. Cedar Barstow, and as a member of the Hakomi International Ethics Committee (HIEC) for nearly 15 years. Our mission with RUPI, “The Heart of Ethics,” is to explore the use of personal and role power to prevent, reduce and repair harm, as well as to promote the healthy evolution of relationships and sustainable well-being. The mission of HIEC is to maintain the integrity of relationships between members of the Hakomi community (teachers and therapists) and our students, clients and the general public through the skillful use of power and influence.

My thoughts on the matter

What I have found is that situations escalate and the potential for legal intervention increases as individuals become polarized and righteous in their positions, not understanding their power or influence and unable to hear the impact of their actions.   When people can turn toward each other, and learn to listen without defense or shame, there is tremendous potential for resolution, repair, and evolution of relationships.

Most recently, I have been sharing The Heart of Ethics in the yoga community. I am passionate about this work and look forward to every opportunity to share it.
